FAQ

This is a bit of a joke, since I’ve had no questions and it may be years before I get a visitor.  However, these are questions I anticipate a person might ask if they found the blog.

Q:  Does this blog cover The Vampire Diaries novels?

A:  For now, I’m only focusing on the show.  If I get through the entire show I will probably then turn my focus to the books (though only the ones written by L.J. Smith, the others are dead to me).

Q:  Why do you like The Vampire Diaries?

A:  Because I think it’s an amazing show with amazing plotting.  Shows like Lost get a lot of (I think undeserved) credit for its plotting, but The Vampire Diaries is so rich…It never leaves you waiting too long for answers, but always leaves you wanting to know more.  After every revelation (which feel so organic and obvious once you hear it) there’s more mystery and suspense underneath, so the show leaves you in a constant place of gratification and frustration.  I also think (over time) the acting becomes incredible.  There’s a whole lot of kudos I won’t get into here, but rather in the blog entries.

Q:  But there was that one time that one thing was done stupidly.

A:  Yes there was.  And I’ll call it out when I come to it.  But it doesn’t change my love for the show as a whole.  You can leave (constructive) disagreements in the comments or you can find a Vampire Diaries blog that better suits your interests.

Q:  But there was that one time that something was awesome and you said it wasn’t.

A:  That’s true.  But I love the show and so when something bothers me I want it mentioned, not because everyone must agree but because that’s how I show my own love.  That I can love it and still call out bad acting, rapey love interests and so forth.  Again, (constructive) comments are welcome, but otherwise this may not be the blog for you.

Q: What do terms like “sadsack of the week” mean?

A:  An explanation of the terms can be found here.

Q:  Do you post spoilers?

A:  Not as news in and of itself, because that’s not interesting to me.  In my analyses, I won’t mention spoilers of episodes that have never aired.  If a writer or actor reveals information that is just so upsetting that I have to write a post about it I’ll give a big flashing spoiler warning and put the article behind the fold.  However, in these episode roundups, I have to catch up on three seasons already aired and I know where the show is going; therefore, I sometimes mention things that haven’t happened yet but will before the end of the third season.  So if you’re starting the series from scratch and reading along, and worry about being spoiled in any random way about what you yourself haven’t seen yet, this is a warning.  Also, I’d like to ask guests not to drop spoilers in the comment section.  This isn’t meant to be that kind of site.

Q:  I love your blog and wish to quote whole sections of it on my website.  May I do that?

A:  Please don’t plagiarize me.  Quote what you like but please say where the passage comes from and link back to this blog.

Q:  Where do you get such cool pictures?

A:  Obviously, all images originally belong to the CW and its affiliates.  Some I found on a random google image search, but most come from this website:  Vampirediariesweb.com.  And I’m just going to copy their disclaimer now:

All Captures in this gallery are created by the staff unless stated otherwise, so please do not place caps on your own site claiming as your own. Q:  I know a lot about legal issues and/or work on the show and you’re doing something questionable here.

A:  Please let me know if I’m violating some sort of copyright law here.  This is my first blog and the potential for unintended screwups is high.  I love the show deeply and want to keep the blog on the up and up, so if something like the pictures or wev are inappropriately linked please don’t be bashful in letting me know.

Q:  Are you affiliated with the CW network, L.J. Smith, the actors or anyone actually relevant?

A:  No, no I’m not.  So I’m freer to say whatever I like, but on the other hand, what I say has less weight.  But suffice it to say, I’m an unaffiliated fan who has watched this show from the beginning and has a lot to say about it.

If you’re speaking personalities, that’s more a matter of personal taste. With Stefan and Damon, one is so set on being seen as the hero, and one is so set on being seen as the villain, that the nuances of their personalities are unconsciously suppressed in favor of these hypothetical selves. The female characters don’t have this idealized self-image to live up to, and so they can just be themselves, which makes them a bit stronger with regards to agency (i.e. they can react to things however they want to react to things, and take action however they’d like). Generally, I do think strength between the genders is pretty egalitarian in this show. Oh, for new and tertiary characters though, I’d say the women are stronger. There’s a good track record here of developing strong, interesting 3-dimensional women that’s just not as present with the new male characters. And the female new characters are usually pretty powerful fighters too. On the other hand, the female new characters tend to die pretty easily, so…there’s that.
